After a short study, he was sent to the front line. Combat path: fought in intelligence. On August 30, 1943, in a battle near the village of Krasnoe, Smolensk Region, while reconnaissance of the enemy's location, Vasily Romanovich discovered a German dugout. He pelted him with grenades, killing four German soldiers. At Stalingrad, Vasily Romanovich was seriously wounded - he lost a leg. After treatment, he received the second group of disability.
