New voices of the North: young researchers from China shared ideas on the development of the North

On May 25, 2024, the results of the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Youth Arctic: Science for the Future” were summed up in Khanty-Mansiysk.

During the conference, the following events were held: an international discussion platform “The North and the Arctic: youth scientific dialogue,” a design and educational intensive “Youth Arctic: Science for the Future,” a strategic session “Give the Arctic! – responds to the heart” that includes creative ideas for the development of the northern territories in the following areas: the quality of life of the population of the northern and Arctic territories, ecology and nature management, ethnocultural tourism and Arctic tourism, infrastructure development.

Participants from the Oceanic University of China, regions of Russia and municipalities of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug-Ugra presented more than 30 projects of practical importance for solving urgent socio-economic and environmental problems in the development of the northern and Arctic territories.

According to the results of the work, the presentation of projects by the participants of the conference, federal and international experts marked three winners. The projects presented at the conference will have the opportunity to be promoted on the site of the International Organization of the Northern Regions “Northern Forum,” the Russian-Asian Consortium for Arctic Research.

Gao Fei (graduate student at the School of Law of the Ocean University of China), Wang Ran (Master’s student at the School of International Relations and Public Administration of the Ocean University of China) were invited to an internship at Ugra State University.

The young scientists noted the experience of participating in this conference, which provided them with a deeper understanding of Arctic research and the huge potential of Chinese-Russian cooperation in this area. They also expressed special gratitude to the organizers and experts for their guidance and expressed hope to apply their achievements in future research practice.

“Discussion platforms of this level are a great opportunity for talented young people to exchange experiences and establish professional contacts. Ugra State University has long been immersed in studying issues related to the development of the Northern and Arctic territories, and the projects presented today by our students confirm this. I am confident that through such events we will contribute to strengthening the scientific, technical, economic and human resources foundation for the development of the Arctic zone,” Roman Kuchin, Rector of Ugra State University, stated.

The events of the conference were held with the support of the Government of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug-Ugra, in partnership with the International Organization of Northern Regions “Northern Forum,” the Russian-Asian Consortium for Arctic Research.
