During the years of the Great Patriotic War, more than 600,000 residents of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic were drafted into the army. In the military mobilization work carried out in the republic at the initial stage of the war, a special place was occupied by the formation of national and international divisions. On the territory of the republic in 1941-1942. the 89th, 408th, 409th, 261st (2nd formation), 390th (1st formation), 76th, 17th Armenian divisions were formed, the personnel of which was mainly staffed Armenians. In addition to the listed divisions, in the initial period of the Great Patriotic War, the 31st, 61st, 136th (15th Guards), 138th (70th Guards), 151st, 236th were formed or reinforced in Soviet Armenia , 320th, 406th rifle divisions and a number of other units, a significant part of the contingent of which were Armenians.
More than 70 thousand Armenians were awarded orders and medals, 103 of them received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. During the war, more than 60 generals-Armenians commanded large army formations.
